Bubbles!

In class this week we are going to be playing with bubbles. You can join in too, if you have bubble mixture (or washing up liquid) and a wand at home. Take some photographs and send them to us. Or you could look at these pictures of bubbles.

Science of bursting bubbles has its bubble burst - CSMonitor.comChina Blowing Major Bubbles In 2017

How many different things do you notice about the bubbles?

Why do you think the bubbles are round?

What makes them burst?

Can you draw a bubble? How could you make it look real?

Dreams

Sometimes I lie upon my bed
And let my dreams float round my head.
Sometimes I think the strangest things
Like I’m a bird and I’ve got wings!

This is the beginning of a poem about dreams. We all have them and sometimes they are so strange! What strange dreams have you had? Can you remember?

Think about these questions…..

Do impossible things happen in dreams? Do you think dreams can ever come true? Can you dream during the day?

Draw or paint a picture of a strange dream. Don’t forget –  in a dream objects can be any size or colour. Here is one by an artist called Marc Chagall, he painted many of his dreams.

Powerful words

When we say things they can make other people happy or sad. A lot of people are worried at the moment. Can you think of some things you could say to people that would make them happy? Please send us a picture of your messages and we can make a message board to cheer everyone up.

You could put your messages up around the house to cheer up your family.

What is alive?

Have a look at my pictures. Which of these things are alive and which are not alive?

How do you know they are alive? Can you think of some things that help us to know whether something is alive?

Can you make a list of items in your house that are alive, that are not alive and maybe a list of some things that used to be alive.

Maths: week beginning 8th June

What is 2 meters?

You might have heard a lot about keeping 2 meters away from people you do not live with so that everyone stays safe and we do not share our germs. Meters are a way of measuring how long something is. So what does 2 meters look like?

Here is Ekram lying next to a 2meter sign. He is nearly the same length!

Can you find a measuring tape or ruler at home and see how long 2m is!

I measured it at home and found it was the same as 6 and a half of the CGP books.

  • What can you find that is the same as 2m? (How many of your hands, feet, scissors, etc is it?)
  • What can you find that is bigger than 2 meters?
  • What can you find that is smaller than 2 meters?

Maths – week beginning 1st June

Halves and Quarters:
Lesson 1: Finding half of an amount. Did you do last week’s work on cutting shapes in half? Now we will find half of an amount. First watch the video.

Now make your own lady birds. Remember to share the spots equally between the 2 wings so half are on each wing.
What numbers can you halve and what numbers are hard to halve? eg 6 spots, 8 spots, 10 spots, 14 spots.

You can also practice halves on p37 of your Key Stage 1 maths book.

Lesson 2: What is a quarter? We find a quarter by cutting a shape into 4 equal parts. Look at the video.

Then copy some of these shapes.
Can you colour in 1/4 of each shape?

Lesson 3: Finding a quarter of an amount. Watch the video. Remember we find a quarter by sharing into 4 equal groups.

Explore different numbers. What numbers can you share into quarters? Can you share these numbers into 4 equal parts? 8, 10, 12, 15, 16, 17, 20?

You can also practice quarters on p39 of your Key Stage 1 maths book.

Lesson 4: Do you feel confident in finding halves and quarters? Why not try my quiz to see how well you do. Remember to include your name.

I wonder how many points you will score!

Go on a pretend holiday in the UK.

Next week is our half term holiday. We are not allowed to go anywhere on holiday at the moment, but we can use our imaginations and pretend!!
We want you to plan your own pretend UK holiday. You can pick anywhere in the United Kingdom that you would like to visit. Here are a few ideas:

Plan your holiday:

  • Where are you going? What country is it in? England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales? Can you draw a map?
  • How will you get there? Would you go by car, train or aeroplane? How long will it take you? What places would you go past on your way? You can use google maps to help you find directions.
  • Where would you like to sleep when you get there? Will you stay in a hotel or will you camp in a tent? Remember – this is an imaginary holiday so it can be anything you like!
  • What will you do there? Can you find out what special things you can do there. What things can you visit or see or do? Will you climb mountains, swim in the sea, explore castles or go for long walks
  • What will you eat? Different parts of the UK have special food they are famous for eg Wales is famous for bara brith, Scotland is famous for haggis and shortbread, Ireland has champ or soda bread, and in England we like scones and jam, cake or fish and chips at the seaside. Can you find out what special food they have where you want to go? You might even be able to make some of it.

Go on your holiday!! (or pretend to)
When you have made your plan, maybe you and your family can act out your holiday

  • you could pack a little bag…remember your toothbrush!
  • make a den to sleep in…is it your tent or a hotel room?
  • pretend to do some of the special things you would do on holiday.
  • take some holiday photos of your family doing holiday things.
  • build a model of some of the places you would see there and show your family around?
  • go on a walk and pretend to see the sights, climb a mountain, etc.
  • make a souvenir to bring home. This will help you to remember your holiday.

Finally: Can you make a postcard to send to Jo and Alison? You should draw a lovely picture on one side of something you saw on your holiday and then write a letter to tell us everything you did. We can’t wait to hear all about your pretend holidays. (Maybe we will do one too!) If you live near the school you could post it in the school post box on Wilmot Street.
