Northern Ireland

Last week we learned that the national flower of Northern Ireland is a shamrock. In England we call the plant clover and you can often find them in the grass. Some people try to hunt for a four leaf clover, which is said to be very lucky!St Patrick's Day 2016: What's the difference between a shamrock ...

Can you make one from card or paper? If you haven’t got any green card use white paper and then colour it green! Can you see their heart shaped leaves?

English, for the week of 29th June

We are still exploring The Grufffalo! There are lots of activities for you to do in your pack. Here are some more….

Activity 1

Gruffalo Play Dough | Gruffalo activities, Preschool playdough ...

You could try making one out of playdough. Ask an adult to help you.

Recipe:
  1. 2 cups plain flour (all purpose)
  2. 1 cup salt.
  3. 1/2 cup cocoa powder or some brown food colouring.
  4. 2 tbsps vegetable oil.
  5. 2 tbsps cream of tartar.
  6. 2 cups of boiling water.
  7. 4 drops of glycerine (optional extra for increased shine and stretch)
Method:
  • Combine all of the dry ingredients in a bowl
  • Stir in the vegetable oil
  • Mix together
  • Stir in the boiling water (adult only) and mix until combined
  • When it has cooled a little, knead it on a clean surface until it loses all stickiness and becomes smooth and stretchy. No residue should come off on your fingers. If it is still sticky add a little more flour, if too dry and crumbly add more water, a tablespoon at a time. It might smell chocolately, but you mustn’t eat it!

Activity 2

The Monster Machine © Nicola L Robinson – Nicola L Robinson ...

Design your own monster. Think of all the monsters in books, in cartoons and films. How will yours be different? Will it be furry or scaly? Will it have one eye or two, or maybe more? Will there be any tusks, or teeth or claws?

Activity 3

Now we need to write a description of our monster.

Here are some words you might need:

hairy   scaly  orange   blue    claws   paws   teeth   jaws   friendly  grumpy   tiny  huge

Remember capital letter, full stops and finger spaces. Use your phonics to sound out any words you don’t know how to spell. Check it all makes sense!

Here is my description of a monster. I wonder if you have got a good picture of it in your head. You could try to draw it too!

My monster is very shy. It will hide whenever it hears a human and it thinks they are very noisy! It is small and can fit inside a washing machine, which is where it likes to hide. The skin is scaly and the most unusual purple colour, like a ripe grape. It’s large eyes are close together and green.  One shiny tooth is in the middle of its wide mouth. A long tail curls around it’s body and helps it to swing from the lights on the ceiling.

Happy writing……

Activity 2, Scotland. Design your own tartan.

Find the sheets in your pack and create a fabulous tartan pattern.

In Scotland tartan is traditional and used for clothes, rugs and many other things. Tartan is a pattern, made by horizontal (going across) and vertical (going up) coloured lines, crossing over each other. The stripes that cross over each other are called setts. These setts are repeated over and over to create the pattern. Here are some to give you some ideas.

Giving Directions

When we control computers we need to use special instructions. Today we are exploring a beebot. This is a small toy with arrow buttons to make it move forward, backward and to turn right and left.
A beebot has a very good memory so you need to use the cross button to tell it to forget the last instructions you gave it.
You can see the instructions the beebot has remembered in the orange box under the arrows.
Use the home button to send him back to the start.
Explore the different mats. Set yourself challenges to move the beebot around.
