Today we will be learning to use the past tense correctly.

Watch this video to find out what you need to do:

Yesterday you made some word cards and drew a map with all of the characters and places in the Disgusting sandwich story. Today we are going to learn some verbs to help us to write some sentences about the story.

Verbs are doing or being words.

When we use verbs in a story we usually use past tense because we are writing about something that has already happened.

Look at these verbs, do you know what they all mean?

Make some more word cards containing these verbs or you can come up with some of your own. Match them together with one or two of the words you wrote yesterday and use them to write a sentence about the story.

e.g. The frog dropped the sandwich into the duckpond.

See if you can write at least 5 sentences.

Today we are learning to: edit and publish an information report

Look at these examples of information reports:

The information has been organised using these features:
Titles
Sub headings
Diagrams
Captions
Labels
Bullet Points
Key words in bold
Boxes
Colour

All these things help us to read and understand the information clearly.

Task 1
First you need to edit the writing you did yesterday. Check for capital letters, full stops, spelling mistakes and missing words. Can someone else understand what you have written? Change any mistakes you have made.

Task 2
Now you need to write your information report out again. This time you can add some of the features above such as boxes and pictures to make it easier to read and understand. Here is an example:

Activity 2:

Science

Today we are learning to: compare the suitability of materials.

We have learned that materials have different properties. When we make something we choose what to make it from because of the properties of the material.
e.g.
We make windows from glass because glass is transparent.
We make walls from bricks because bricks are hard.
We don’t make the carpet from marshmallow because it is too sticky!

Task:
I would like you design your own silly house. Think about what we usually build a house from and choose different materials that would be very silly for building  a house.
e.g.
You could make the roof out of ice cream or you could make the door out of paper.

Draw a picture or make a model of your silly house. Then write 4 or more sentences explaining why it would be silly to choose those materials. Use the property words you learned last week. Here is an example:

It would be silly to make the roof out of chocolate buttons because they are too squashy.
It would be silly to make the walls out of gingerbread because gingerbread is too absorbent.

Today we are learning to: write an information report

We are going to write the second half of our information report. The paragraphs we need to write are:

What is their habitat like?
What do they eat?
Interesting facts

Here is an example:

What is the leopard’s habitat like ?
Leopards live all over the world including in Subsaharen Africa and North East Africa. They spend most of their time resting in trees or hiding in caves. Some leopards in India live close to people’s houses but this is very rare.

What do leopards eat?
Leopards are amazing hunters. They can catch prey that is much bigger than themselves. They are carnivores and only eat meat. Examples of what leopards can eat include gazelle, warthog and wildebeest.

Interesting Facts
Black panthers are not panthers at all they are actually leopards. Leopards stop hungry lions from stealing their food by dragging it up trees. They can travel 10 miles a night, some even travel 40 miles or more.

Remember to include:
– Capital letters
– Full stops
– Finger spaces
– Neat handwriting
– Headings
– Joining words such as: and, but, because, so
– Sentences that make sense
– Phonics

Today we are learning to: write an information report

Today we are going to begin to write our information text about the animal that you chose yesterday. Remember you are only writing about one animal.

Task 1
First we need to write an introduction to explain what our report will be about. Here is an example of an introduction:

Introduction
Leopards are a member of the cat family but they are much bigger and fiercer than pet cats. There are different types of leopard such as the Javan leopard and the Indian leopard . Read on to find more fascinating information about leopards.

Task 2:
Next we need to write our first paragraph. We can use questions as headings to organize our writing. Here is my first paragraph about leopards.

What do leopards look like ?
Leopards are usually light in colour with dark spots called rosettes. The rosettes are outlined in black with a yellow or grey background. Leopards also have very sharp teeth which they use to kill their prey.  Leopards have short legs and a long body. Male leopards are bigger than female leopards.

You need to write at least 3 or 4 sentence for each part of your reports. Remember to include:
– Capital letters
– Full stops
– Finger spaces
– Neat handwriting
– Headings
– Joining words such as: and, but, because, so
– Sentences that make sense
– Phonics

Try to say each sentence out loud before you write it down.

Do not write the whole report. We will write the second half of the report tomorrow. Please send me a picture of what you have done so far.

Today we will be learning to: research information about an animal.

This week we will be learning to write our own information text. First we need to do some research to find lots of information to put into our writing. It is important that we organize our research so that we don’t end up with too much information that we don’t understand. I have done some research about sea turtles:

I used a table with headings to organize my writing.

The places where we get information are called
sources. They could be websites, videos, books or even members of my family. I wrote down the name of each source and the information I got from each one.

I also chose to research 4 things: ‘What do they look like?’ What is their habitat like?’ ‘What do they eat?’ and ‘Interesting facts’ This will help me decide which information to choose so I don’t end up with far more than I need.

I wrote short notes instead of copying out large parts of the book.

Task:
Copy this table onto a piece of paper:

Now choose an animal to research. Fill in the table with notes about what you find out. Here are some websites you could use to find out about your animal.
https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/category/discover/animals/
https://www.youngvetsclub.com/weird-and-wonderful-facts
https://www.ducksters.com/animals.php
https://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/animals.html

Please make sure an adult is supervising you when you are doing research on the internet!

You could also use books you have at home or a member of your family may know lots about your animal. You may already know lots of facts yourself!

You will need this work to complete tomorrow’s lesson so it is very important that you do it. Let me know if you have any difficulties.
