Maths – week beginning 20th April

Volume and Capacity:  We have measured length and we have measured weight. Now we are going to be thinking about capacity and volume. These tell us how much liquid can fit inside a container.

Lesson 1: Are  containers full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty?

Click on this picture and watch the video for week 1 lesson 4.

Task: Look through the worksheet on line by the video, or look through your cupboards. What containers can you find that are: full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty or empty?

Lesson 2: Measuring the capacity of some containers. Watch the video first and then see if you can measure the capacity of some containers in your house.

You will need:

*containers (cups, bowls, pots, saucepans, etc.)

*something to measure with (small pots, spoons, etc).

*water

Remember to find a safe place to work where it will not matter if you spill the water – maybe the sink is a good idea!!!

Lesson 3 : Looking at standard measures….milli litres (ml) and litres (l)

Watch the video and then see what measures with ml or l you can find on the containers in your house. Which ones have the biggest capacity? Which ones have the smallest capacity?

Maybe you can do some cooking with an adult in your family and measure out the ingredients using ml or litres or spoons?

Please leave a comment to let us know which activities you tried at home. What did you cook? What was the container in your house with the biggest capacity? We would love to hear how you got along.
